The Rewarding Journey of a Care Worker
When did you join myCare?
I joined in January 2023.
What does a day in your life look like as a care worker?
I start work around 7:30 AM, assisting with tasks like breakfast and personal care for my clients. I take a short break, then go back for lunch, tea, and evening visits. I visit the same clients every day. For some clients, I help with medication management, and I visit most of them twice a day. Some clients may require up to four visits per day.
What’s your favourite part about working in care?
I love seeing the smiles on my clients’ faces when I arrive each day. It feels rewarding to make their lives a little easier, whether it’s helping with breakfast or personal care. I enjoy making a difference in both their and their families’ lives.
Why do you love working with myCare?
Since I started, I’ve really appreciated the support from the management team. I rarely have any issues, but when I do, Vivian (Care Coordinator) is always ready to listen and help. The work has been perfect for me since I moved to Aberdeen.
How did you find the recruitment and training process with myCare?
The recruitment process was straightforward. I filled out an online form, had a phone call, and was invited for an interview. Everything went smoothly, and I was offered the job right away. The recruitment and training were seamless. Jennifer (Trainer) made the training engaging and interactive, which made it enjoyable.
What advice do you have for someone wanting to start a career in care?
I would advise them to be passionate about it. If you’re not, some challenges could overwhelm you. It’s important to be patient and open-hearted. I don’t see it as just a job; kindness and empathy are key.
What is a common misconception people have about working in care?
Many people assume that working in care means dealing with a lot of personal care, which can scare them off. However, it’s really about helping someone live a better life and making their day a little easier. While there can be challenging days, it’s all about mindset and attitude. This is not a job you can do just for the pay – you need to genuinely love the work.
What are your career goals?
I would love to grow in the industry. My goal is to become a senior care worker and eventually work up to a care coordinator. I’m passionate about the care industry and want to develop within it.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
When I’m not working, I like to sleep! I also enjoy watching movies and series. I’m currently watching Night Agent and Lucifer, both of which are action-packed dramas that keep me intrigued. I love cooking and even have my own cooking channel, although I’ve put it on hold for now. I enjoy experimenting with new recipes and exploring different cultural foods. If I see a recipe I like, I can’t wait to try it.
What is your favourite dish to cook from your own country?
Jollof Rice – I’m getting better at it!
Have you tried cooking any Scottish foods?
Yes, I’ve made fish and chips, fish pie, and shepherd’s pie – anything with potatoes since my partner loves them! I’m also looking forward to trying Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties.
If you could change anything about your role, what would you change?
There’s nothing I’d want to change.
What does being sponsored at myCare mean to you?
It provides me with the opportunity to live and work in the UK, not only for me but for my family. I recently got engaged, so it’s an exciting new chapter for us.
Tell us more about the wedding!
We recently got engaged and are planning our wedding here. Nigerians love to celebrate and have big parties, so we’re working on getting all our family members to come down for the event.
Is there anything we can do to support you with the wedding planning?
Just some time off when the big day comes!
Is there anything else you would like to add or comment?
I want to say thank you to the myCare team. It’s been amazing working with everyone over the last two years, and I look forward to what the future holds for us.
Comments from client JS (pictured)
“She is a very good, excellent carer. I’ve had her for two years. I really like her personality – she can take a joke and is kind to me. When she was on holiday for two weeks, I missed her so much.”
